Covenant Coordinator Council of Mallorca invests 600 thousand euro to fight climate change

Following Mallorca's commitment to anticipate climate change unavoidable effects, the counsellor of Local Development Joan Font and the insular director of Local Cooperation, Joan Manera signed an agreement of collaboration between the insular institution and 33 signatories of the European Covenant of Mayors initiative.

Mallorca newsAccording to the agreement, Mallorca Council, as Covenant Coordinator, will fund the writing of Sustainable Energy and Climate Action Plans (SECAPs) for each municipality. Such plans will allow the towns to specify concrete actions, like the installation of a computer system to improve energy efficiency thanks to the monitor of energy consumption and expenses. The plans will also include actions in other areas, such as public lighting or waste collection. In exchange, the towns' councils promise to collaborate actively for the compilation, treatment and study of the energy data and to organize dissemination actions for the Energy Day 2019.

Mallorca Council wants to involve all municipalities of the island in the fight against climate change. As explained by the president of the Council, Miquel Ensenyat: "A joint action is necessary. The fight against climate change has to be global and we want to implicate as many towns as possible in Mallorca. Many tools are already available to us, thanks to the Covenant of Mayors initiative.”

The counsellor of Local Development Joan Font pointed out that “The information we receive in respect to climate and energy challenges proves that climate change is happening and we are all responsible. We, men and women, have to make something about this".
